Sophie Coryndon was born in Taunton in 1975 and graduated from Cardiff Art College in 1997, obtaining a BA (Hons) in Fine Art. Her public commissions include six paintings for Luton Airport, six paintings for the singer, Joe Cocker and two paintings for the Villa Nova Hotel in Barbados commissioned by Nina Campbell.
There has been a gradual and serious-minded evolution in Sophie's work, which now draws more for its strength on disciplined draughtsmanship, and a subtle awareness of design that achieves a strong sense of rhythm and volume within her work. The colour, drama and physical presence of the early paintings have been maintained and developed, and while they retain their remarkable appeal, these paintings are less concerned with the decorative and are moving towards metaphor and allusion. There has been a change in emphasis in a series of paintings that present the flowers within a context, rather than in isolation. Sophie Coryndon has been able to renew and re-shape her own work within self-imposed limitations of subject and medium, and to re-interpret the genre of flower painting for a modern audience.
